University of East Anglia – Biology Taster Lecture Online – The Science Behind Cancer Vaccines

6 November @ 3:35 pm - 4:20 pm

Free

This interactive talk will consider how a person’s immune system can target some cancers on its own or with the help of cancer vaccines, to either prevent cancers from occurring or to treat them once they have developed.

We will consider the key molecular and cellular changes that occur in cells as they transform into cancer cells and why these characteristics make some cancers suitable to be treated with vaccines. During this discussion we will answer the questions ‘what are cancer vaccines?’ and ‘how successful are they?’ including details of some current cancer vaccines.

The talk will conclude with a discussion around the future for cancer vaccines.

Suitable for: Key Stage 5 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Biology/Medicine and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
